  • Divers on a tour boat prepare to photograph a whale shark as it nears the surface on a calm day in La Paz Bay. This area presents an amazing opportunity for people to see whale sharks but the tourism is not well regulated at this point and more guidelines to protect the whale sharks need to be put in place.

  • Trains moving coal through Forsyth, Montana. Since the mines have been running, over 550 million tons of coal have been dug up. Enough earth has been moved to fill both the Erie and Panama canals five times over. The proposed Tongue River Railroad would facilitate moving coal out of the Tongue River Valley and onward to the West Coast where it could be shipped to Asia. See this link for important info about transporting coal by train: http://www.coaltrainfacts.org/key-facts

  • On a freezing, early morning, a solar-powered windmill powers the pump that brings water to the surface for cattle on a ranch in Southeastern Montana. The power plant 5 miles away in Colstrip is dependent on water to both fuel and cool the steam generators and to flush out its waste products. Since it is located in a dry area, two pipelines have been built to tap into the Yellowstone River, 30 miles north. The plant consumes nearly 22,000 gallons of water every minute.
